The Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO) contracts with a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility to provide drop-off disposal services for all Franklin County residents. Residents can bring their old batteries, grease, lawn chemicals, paints, strippers, insecticides, etc. for recycling and/or environmentally safe disposal. Most items are free to dispose of, except latex and other water-based paints as they are not considered to be hazardous.
Additionally, the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO) operates a Recycling Convenience Center, which serves as a one-stop destination to recycle a wide-range of materials including basic recyclable items, some household hazardous waste, fall leaves and pumpkins, etc. Visit SWACO's website for more information >
Disposing of latex and water-based paints:
Paint hardeners are available at most hardware stores and may be added to leftover latex paint in order to solidify the unused product. The lid may also be left off to speed up the drying process. Cat litter or sawdust may also be used, but it may take up to several days before the paint is fully solidified. Once dried it may be disposed of with your regular curbside trash. The HHW drop-off facility will also accept these paints, typically at $1.00 per gallon.
